Have you ever wanted to be a part of something bigger than yourself?
I think most people do.
The older that I get the more that I find myself evaluating my life. Have I served a purpose? If I died, would I have left the world a better place than I found it? Did I make a real impact on the lives of others? I would like to believe that I can say yes to most of these questions. I also have to admit that volunteering is not always easy, because there is a lot of selfishness within me. I find that I am constantly trying to keep myself in check by asking myself this simple question, "Am I putting the needs of others above my own?"
Putting the needs of others above our own is not easy for any of us. As American's we are bombarded with advertising messages that tell us to do just the opposite. Despite all of those messages, America is filled with very generous people. Every day I am surrounded by the generosity of individuals that choose to donate their time and talents to individuals and their families as they face a terminal illness. I am so blessed when I see our volunteers pour love and kindness into the lives of the people we serve.
